Pink Floyd - The Endless RiverThis evening, Pink Floyd's new album, The Endless River, went straight in to the UK's official album charts at the coveted number one spot, demoting Ed Sheeran's album X, and keeping the new Calvin Harris album Motion at bay. Taylor Swift's album 1989 also felt the Floyd effect. The new Queen and Foo Fighters albums couldn't compete either. It is Pink Floyd's sixth UK number one, and the last time the group topped the chart was back in 1995 with live double album, PULSE.

A spokesperson for the band told OfficialCharts.com: "Pink Floyd is both thrilled and surprised at the level of international interest in this their final album. They want to thank the fans for their support and hope that in some small way, The Endless River has reminded them of the old fashioned joy of listening to an album in its entirety."

Album charts in other countries are now also starting to show The Endless River, and it has reached number one in Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Norway. Italy and Australia are clearly tougher nuts to crack, with the album entering their charts at number two and three respectively.

On the subject of The Endless River, our exclusive interview with Egyptian cover artist Ahmed Emad Eldin will be here very shortly, giving you some background to Ahmed, his life and work, and what TER's cover image was originally called...

UPDATE: Pink Floyd's official Facebook page has been updated to reveal that the album is now number one in twenty countries - UK, Germany, France, Canada, The Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Italy, Croatia and Slovenia. Other charts include: USA 3, Australia 3, Finland 4, Spain 6, with many more to come. They also note that TER is the best-selling album in Romania, although there are no official charts there.
