Just released is Passion for Speed: Ferrari Enzo, the first in a series of in-depth DVDs about Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason's amazing collection of iconic cars. The DVD focuses on just one model: the Ferrari F60 - more commonly referred to as the Ferrari Enzo - named
after the founder of the eponymous motoring company that is famed around the world for their sports and racing cars.
In the DVD, which runs for 110 minutes, Nick takes writer and racer Mark Hales for a blast along the country lanes before heading off to Anglesey Circuit where Mark puts the Enzo through its paces. Even going through a small local village you get a feel for some of the thought behind the design of the car - it will even allow you to adjust the ride height to cater for speed humps around town!
We've taken a good look at the DVD to share with you more about this release, and you can read it below. First, though, here's a small promo video for the release:
The main feature runs for some 68 minutes, and don't expect the sort of messing around you find with BBC's Top Gear. This is a thoroughly analytical look at each aspect of the car, and whether or not you are a petrolhead/gearhead, it is fascinating seeing and hearing Mark Hales' gradual changes and improvements.
For those who won't have the good fortune to have a close look at one, in one segment Hales guides the viewer around the cockpit of the car, and the mighty engine too. This gives a good insight into what it is like to own and drive this particular model.
Clearly there are some things that aren't perfect with the Enzo, and Hales discusses these as the documentary progresses. This isn't a puff-piece for Ferrari, which is quite refreshing!
The bonus features include one segment which is some fifteen minutes of Hales taking the Enzo around a track. Glorious as the car is, this part of the DVD - shot exclusively from an in-car camera mounted behind his right shoulder, is for me probably the most dispensible bit of the disc. With the track over-exposed thanks to the relatively dark cockpit, all you can really see is Hales steering, and flicking the gear paddles.
The other bonus feature will be a key one for Floyd fans of any motoring persuasion, and consists of the full length interview with Nick, excerpts of which are in the main feature. It's one of the longest interviews with Nick that he has ever done, and makes for very interesting viewing.
As we note above, this DVD intends to be the first of a series, and with a definite focus on the car, some Floyd fans might hestitate to indulge in this. However, even if not remotely interested in cars, most will find the interview with Nick enjoyable, not least as it is conducted in his garage with a number of bits of interesting memorabilia seen on display at times. We're looking forward to seeing the next in the series and hope it lives up to the standards of the inaugural release.
