Many of you will recall our story from January 9th, revealing that Nick Mason is amongst the 30 musicians who have committed themselves to a new charity project, designing Gibson Les Paul guitars! The project is called Gibson Guitar Town London, and hopes to replicate the success of a similar project in Nashville, Tennessee in 2005, which raised over $300,000 for local charities.
Others involved include Phil Manzanera and Gerald Scarfe, to further the Floyd connection!
Nick Mason is pictured here with a specially designed Gibson SG guitar which is part of the charity campaign. The instrument, designed by visual artist Justine Smith and titled “Shine On,” was signed by Mason before being displayed publicly at The O2 (formally the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London). The display begins June 25 and will last for 10 weeks.
The Smith-designed SG is covered with authentic 50 Pound notes, and is one of 30 on display at The O2. The SG will go under the hammer at an auction event in October 2007 where all proceeds will be split equally between The Prince’s Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust, and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy. More details and another picture of Nick at GibsonEurope.com.
The Gibson website also includes details and pictures of when Phil Manzanera dropped by the Gibson Guitar Studio in London to sign the ten foot hand painted Roxy Music Les Paul guitar for Gibson Guitartown London. The guitar was painted by visual artist Stephen Buckley and will be public displayed around More London SE1, by Tower Bridge for ten weeks from late June.
Legendary visual artist Gerald Scarfe is also shown in his studio with a ten foot Gibson Les Paul which he is designing on behalf of Ozzy Osbourne as part of the campaign. The guitar will also be displayed publicly around More London, SE1 from June 28th for ten weeks.
Our thanks to DarkSideMoon666 for letting us know about this.
