Last night (January 15th) saw former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters performing a wonderful melancholic version of "Wish You Were Here" acoustically with Eric Clapton, with the help of backing singers Katie Kissoon, Carol Kenyon and PP Arnold, as part of NBC's charity gala, Tsunami Aid: A Concert Of Hope.
The performance, which was not shown live, having been pre-recorded at the NBC studio in New York City, featured Roger and Eric sat on stools, playing acoustic guitars, with the lyric delivered in a quiet and almost mournful style which suited the occasion perfectly. Eric chose to simply play guitar, and the subtle backing vocal of Katie, Carol, and PP, complemented the respectful reading of the Floyd classic.
Many of the evening's performances will be able to be purchased via the internet as downloads. This will be from the Sony Connect site (which also has a European counterpart) and it is believed that Roger's performance will be one of those made available. The downloads should be on their site soon, but we don't have an exact time frame for you. Our friends over at Roger Waters Online have also heard that there may be a DVD of the evening released next month; we will endeavour to find out more on this for you.
The show may also be being shown on European satellite and digital network, CNBC Europe, this evening at 6pm GMT (CET +1 hour). However, it was also scheduled to show the event live in the early hours of this morning and didn't - see the comments we posted yesterday, from CNBC's Director of Media Comms. However, the schedule has been changed to show this evening's broadcast as now two hours long, from the one hour that it was showing first thing today. Which is a hopeful sign...
Donations can still be made to the charity supported by the show last night - The American Red Cross, or alternatively, you can make a donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee who share all contributions around twelve different charities, ensuring each has the right funding at the right time. Funds raised through the show will support the American Red Cross two-phased assistance plan which includes specialized relief immediately and over the long term in the following areas: food and safe water; healthcare and disease prevention; immediate family supplies; mental health counselling; disaster preparedness and prevention measures.
