Hackers soundtrack

Following on from our recent news that the 2020 Record Store Day would be including amongst the raft of rarities, available on April 18th at participating stores (and not online) releases from Roger Waters, Pink Floyd and Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets, there's a fourth item of interest for Floyd fans included on the list. It's also something that has been the subject of rumour in the past...and now can be confirmed.

The 1995 film Hackers had an interesting music soundtrack, and in particular, an instrumental heard at the climax of the film. In a sequence at New York's Grand Central Station, there is a joint piece by Guy Pratt and David Gilmour to accompany the scene. Rolling Stone did the reveal: "Gilmour visited the home of Guy Pratt, Pink Floyd's touring bassist since Momentarily Lapse of Reason, while the bassist was working on music for the 1995 movie. The meet-up became an impromptu jam session that became 'Grand Central Station'. In the film's credits, the song was only credited to the mysterious sounding Deep Cover".

The exclusive 13-track, 2LP Record Store Day edition of the album will mark the soundtrack's debut on vinyl and will feature tracks that were not included on the original album, including 'Protection' by Massive Attack, 'Open Up' by Leftfield, two pieces by Guy Pratt (including 'Grand Central Station') plus the 'Hackers Suite', performed by composer Simon Boswell.

The gatefold jacket will offer new liner notes from the film's director, Iain Softley, as well as unreleased photos of the cast. The CD and digital edition of Hackers (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which appears the previous day (April 17th) direct from Varese Sarabande will include an additional six tracks.

As with the other RSD 2020 releases, it is a limited edition: often the RSD releases are pressed up as just a couple of thousand or so worldwide. We understand that there are going to be 2,500 of these available to snap up on the day.

And, as we've mentioned previously, these limited edition items are released via RSD participating stores on 18th April 2020 - go to RecordStoreDay.com for more details of who those will be. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores participating; the stores themselves can't sell it online - the record will become available for customers coming through the door of the store from the morning of the 18th (and not before), in limited quantities - first come, first served, and only one copy per customer. After RSD, if copies remain, they may put them for sale online (and of course, there'll also be copies on eBay inevitably...).

UPDATE, 13th March: Due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic, RSD2020 has moved from 18th April, to 20th June. Obviously as the situation develops, if circumstances demand the date may change again.
