Phil Manzanera, the legendary guitarist who made his name with Roxy Music, and more recently played a key role on David Gilmour's On An Island project, starts his 12-part series "A is for Axe" - celebrating the world's best guitarists past and present - on Planet Rock radio this coming Sunday (August 5th).
Tune in from 8pm (UK time - BST) every Sunday for the next twelve weeks, when Phil gives a unique insight into the guitar greats, running through the artists in alphabetical order, from the likes of Jeff Beck to Ritchie Blackmore and from Jimi Hendrix to Eddie Van Halen. He will look at the guitarists’ style, technical ability and musicianship and explain what makes them the top of their game.
He'll also share his experience from over 30 years among the stars of rock when he demonstrates guitar traits and skills from his own recording studio. As a producer, he's chosen by guitarists to work with because of his deep understanding of the instrument, his most recent collaboration being to work with David Gilmour on the On An Island album and tour.
As well as producing the album, he also arranged and wrote with David. As well as Gilmour, he'll be talking about his work with other greats including Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Mick Ronson, BB King, Jeff Beck, Brian May and many others. If that's not enough, he'll also be playing examples of songs showing the guitarists’ influences and style.
