Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason is amongst the 30 musicians who have committed themselves to a new charity project, designing Gibson Les Paul guitars!
The project is called Gibson Guitar Town London, and hopes to replicate the success of a similar project in Nashville, Tennessee in 2005, which raised over $300,000 for local charities.
Thirty ten foot fibreglass Gibson Les Paul guitars (similar to the one shown below from 2005) will be uniquely
designed and endorsed by British household name musical artists. These
one off inspired designs will then be specially painted by entry
winning London community visual artists. All 30 ten foot free standing
Les Paul guitars on show will be a prominent display of creativity that
unites the medium of music and art.
Gibson Guitar Town London will be given its official launch in June
2007 to mark the public display at London’s City Hall for a twelve week
period.
Following this display, the guitars will be sold under the
hammer by Julien’s Auctions at a gala fundraising event next September
at the Mayor Of London’s head quarters; City Hall.
Three appointed
charities will benefit from the auction proceedings as well as money
raised through corporate sponsorship. The three designated charities
are The Princes Trust, Nordoff -Robbins and The Teenage Cancer Trust.
Apart from Nick, other musicians involved include Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, Genesis and Mike and the Mechanics' Mike Rutherford, Queen's Brian May, and Paul Weller.
Weller said: "I am proud to be associated with the Gibson Guitar Town London campaign as it combines my passion and appreciation for the guitar whilst raising money and awareness for three very worthy and deserving charities."
Applications are now being accepted for artists who want to take part in the project, via the www.londonguitartown.com website.
