Nicholas Schaffner's biography of Pink Floyd ("A Saucerful Of Secrets - The Pink Floyd Odyssey") has long been respected as one of the better, and accurate, books about the band.
The book covers all aspects of their history, from the early days to the bust-up which saw Roger Waters leave the band in the mid-80s. It presents both sides of the arguments, striving to stay neutral. It has been a good reference book for many. Indeed, Nick Mason consulted it during the research for his own book, "Inside Out".
Schaffner's book has been out of print for a while, but the good news is that Helter Skelter are bringing out a new edition of the book on 5th August. Apart from an updated cover (making mention of the Live 8 reunion), the book itself is the same as their previous edition, albeit with a smaller page size.
This is sadly due to the tragically premature death of Nicholas. The publishers talked to a number of writers about an update but couldn’t tie the right person down. However, as it stands it is one of the books about the band that deserves reading.
