Darryl Read, star of the film Remember A Day, written by the late Syd Barrett expert and aficionado
Bernard White, and featuring a story based loosely on the life of Syd, has now published the first part of his life story, in the book "Stardom Road".
Remember A Day, available now on DVD and reviewed here on our site, also included a number of people
involved in Syd's real life story, such as Peter Jenner, Jenny Fabian, and others, and includes a rare instrumental of the title track, given to Darryl and Bernard for use in the film by none other than Pink Floyd's Richard Wright! Darryl performs the "Syd" character well, and his "Bird Song Clock" is a very convincing pastiche of an early 70's Barrett track.
However, Darryl's career has spanned many years, and involved him playing with such luminaries as Ray Manzarek (The Doors) and the late John Entwhistle (The Who). Darryl says: "The book is a
biographical/novel and centres on my career in films and TV from the age of 11 in 1963. There is lots on the 60's explosion (from another angle) and the hardcover has 32 pages of b/w & colour photos (the proof!): it ends in mid 1969; where I was a pin-up for FAB 208 magazine. Book 2 'The Angel of Dust' (which I am 4 chapters into); picks up from Stardom Road and goes up to current day."
"Jenny Fabian [author of "Groupie" which includes her experiences with Syd Barrett] wrote the back cover notes, and there are lots of well-know faces featured in the book (like Mitch Mitchell who I was at drama school with), jamming with Graham Bond at the age of 16, and attending a Beatles recording session at Abbey Road. It's basically an underdog story of coming from a broken home in the 50's and making it... from nowhere."
It promises to be an interesting read, and is available now from DarrylRead.com.
