rwandjcWhat does Jon Carin do when he’s not spread across the Pink Floyd universe?

To most of our readers, the multi-talented, multi-skilled Jon Carin needs no introduction. For those who need a clue, he’s the man who has been on tour and the in the studio with Pink Floyd (A Momentary Lapse of Reason, on which he co-wrote “Learning to Fly”, and the follow up album, The Division Bell, and their accompanying tours), David Gilmour, and Roger Waters (In The Flesh Tour, since then a key part of his band on and off the stage). He also performed with the reunited Pink Floyd at Live8 at London’s Hyde Park in 2005.

Others credits include amongst others: The Who, Pete Townshend, Eddie Vedder, Bryan Ferry, and the late Michael Kamen to name a few. He is the only musician to play with both post-Waters Floyd and Roger Waters, establishing himself as a corner stone in the foundation of both bands due to his command of his craft, and is constantly in demand as one of the most respected and sought-after session men.

2006 saw him busier than ever, as he was equally split between accompanying David Gilmour on his “On An Island” record and the subsequent tour, AND Roger Waters on his DSOTM tour, both stretching across Europe, the US, and Canada - even going back and forth on a few occasions to support both artists in a few days’ span, a testament to his immense capacity, depth, and professionalism.

After the conclusion of the US leg of Roger Waters’ tour on October 12th, I asked him “what’s next?” to which he replied with a look as sure as can be “REST !!!” that is until the tour gets back on the road in the land down under.

His latest non-Floyd project is collaboration with the former frontman of the England’s Post-Punk-New-Wave act The Psychedelic Furs, Richard Butler, on his self-titled solo album. Released on April 18 2006 via KOCH Records, this eleven song set features Jon Carin’s undeniable talents as he single-handedly is responsible for producing, engineering, and mixing the album, along with co-writing, and playing all the instruments!

The result is an album lauded by both die-hard fans and critics as a strong comeback for Butler, praising the growth and depth of Butler’s vocal work, enabled by and molded in the frame of Carin’s musical foundation and his pure and natural prowess.

This album shines light on a different side of Carin’s abilities and is sure to be a treat for fans and those who seek inspiration in new places alike. It is available through online retailers such as Amazon, and if you follow the links below (where you can also place your order), you can hear a sample of each of the tracks on the album.

Jon has impressed many over the years with his multi-instrumentational talents, and this album will only further the positive thoughts about the man and his work.

Our thanks to BD regular Arash Danesh for this report.
