The new issue (cover date Sep/Oct 2006) has just hit the UK shelves,
and features a fascinating interview with Guy Pratt, who has worked
with Pink Floyd since 1987 and, of course, most recently toured with
David Gilmour.
Conducted in Windsor, where Guy was performing one of his great "My
Bass and Other Animals" solo shows, the interview is a fascinating
whistle-stop look at his career, talking of how he has got work with
various top musicians over the years.
Naturally
with his recent activities, Guy also explains the bass requirements
that David stipulates ("with early Floyd stuff David wants to hear an
old Precision with a pick which is complete anathema to me") and even
reveals what wedding present the Gilmour's gave!
Guy also talks about other bassists that have either been an influence
to him, or have made an impression over the years. For the bassists out
there, he goes into some detail of the sort of equipment he uses, down
to amplification and type of strings used.
Elsewhere in the magazine is a look at the "20 Greatest Bass Players
Ever", as voted for by the magazine's contributors - these include many
of the top bassists out there. Whilst he was nominated, our favourite
other player - Roger Waters - only makes it into the "I Can't Believe
They Didn't Make The Top 20 Honorary List". Sharing this list with the
likes of Sting and Pino Palladino, Roger is in good company, and it
shows how tough the competition was.
The magazine is now available in the UK, and will be available in the
US and Canada very shortly. It is also available in other countries as
an import. You can also pick up individual copies of the magazine from www.bassguitarmagazine.com, who ship their publication worldwide. Our thanks to Kevin De Ornellas for his help with this story.
