David Gilmour's appearance on the long-running "Desert Island Discs" on BBC Radio today was pretty interesting. The interviews ranged from school days, busking with Syd, early bands including Jokers Wild, through things like The Wall, to recording the new solo album and the future of Pink Floyd. A transcription will be on this site in the next day or so, but in the meantime, here are his selections:
- Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
- Ballad In Plain D - Bob Dylan
- I'm Still Here - Tom Waits
- Dancin' In The Streets - Martha and the Vandellas
- Anthem - Leonard Cohen
- A Man Needs A Maid - Neil Young
- For Free - Joni Mitchell
- Rudi With A Flashlight - The Lemonheads
As part of this long-running series, David had to pick just one record from this list - he went for Martha and the Vandellas so that he had something to dance to.
Apart from the Bible and the complete set of Shakespeare, which everyone gets, he picked an English translation of the Koran. His luxury was an acoustic Martin D35 guitar - stating it was not a luxury: "life would be impossible without a guitar!".
A full transcription will be here in a few days...
