All of us here at Brain Damage offer our very best wishes to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who celebrates the very special occasion of his birthday today (January 27th). We all trust you are having a great day, Nick!
The cornerstone of the band, he had his first drum kit at the tender age of 13. A member of Pink Floyd since the earliest iterations, he is the only one to have appeared on every one of their albums. Thanks to his late father Bill, he has been a "petrol head" from a young boy, and cars have been - and remain - one of his major passions in life. His most recent book, Passion for Speed, is worth checking out, as is the DVD of the same name focusing on his Ferrari Enzo car (with Nick heavily involved). Of course, for those who haven't read it, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd is an absolute essential read, and available in a variety of editions: hardback, softback (paperback) and audiobook, read by Nick himself...
Musically, more recently there has been the release of The Endless River, which has had Nick back on the drums in David Gilmour's south coast studio, augmenting the existing recordings with some new drumwork. He has also been heavily involved with The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains, staged last year in London, and is currently pulling the crowds in to MACRO in Rome, Italy.
Nick has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and also became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member
and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times.
Many happy returns, Nick!

Recently published in eBook format on the Amazon Kindle platform, is The Making Of Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii by Samuel Sleiman.
For Floyd fans, the concept of Live At Pompeii is well known - indeed, we here at Brain Damage have a four part interview with director Adrian Maben covering the story. Sleiman pulls together material and research from multiple sources, including our interview, alongside his own chats with Maben, and original crew members, to take a detailed look at the project - from the early ideas about a concert film, through to the filming, and subsequent additional footage.
Despite its short length (understandable as it just covers this one project), The Making Of Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii is an absorbing read, setting out the initial struggles to get the concept off the ground, the issues with filming in the historic location, and then the story from initial release onwards. For the first time, there's a lot of information on Maben and his background, and how it influenced the idea of what was really an anti-Woodstock type film.
Despite it being an eBook, there are a selection of images included too. There are some great shots from "behind the scenes" of the shoot, not that the mechanics of the filming were ever hidden (one of the points of the production, obviously), but these pictures give further insight into the conditions in the amphitheatre.
Kindle eBooks can be viewed on Apple and Android devices, using the free app, as well as on Kindle readers, of course. You can buy the book, for immediate delivery, via: Amazon UK, Amazon.com, Amazon Canada, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon Spain and Amazon Italy.

The UK's BBC Radio 4 looks Inside the Brain of Gerald Scarfe on Friday, January 26th at 11am, in an exploration of the creative mind.
Gerald Scarfe's drawings have intrigued and alarmed for more than fifty years but where do his ideas come from? Professor Vincent Walsh of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience has a theory he wants to pursue. Vincent is an expert in the workings of the visual brain; he thinks that two specific areas may be talking to each other in an unexpected way, resulting in recognisable faces being mixed up with recognisable objects, hence Mrs Thatcher as an axe, a handbag, and even a shark.
Now, cartoonist and neuroscientist are going to meet. "I for one would be fascinated to know what's going on in my brain..." said Scarfe, best known with Pink Floyd fans for his work on The Wall, as well as earlier creations for the band's tours.
The show was originally broadcast last July (but certainly missed by us), so our thanks to Stuart Barstow for the info. For more details, and how to listen to the show (including on demand after it has aired), visit BBC.co.uk.
