"Indescribable, and not to be missed!" This is Nick Mason's take on the subject of this recent documentary, and to my mind, this is also a fair reflection on the film itself. 'Ron Geesin: An Improvised Life' is a fascinating, one-hour look at this truly unique composer, musician, adjustable spanner enthusiast, performer and artist. Whilst most visitors to Brain Damage will be fully aware of his work with Pink Floyd, co-composing Atom Heart Mother, and working (principally) with Roger Waters on the soundtrack to The Body (which features a full, uncredited Floyd performance on one track), other aspects of his career won't be so familiar to most.
'Ron Geesin: An Improvised Life' is having its first UK broadcast at 9pm this coming Saturday, July 14th. It is being shown on the Sky Arts channel, which is available via Sky, Virgin Media, Talk Talk TV and Now TV.
The documentary gives a potted history of Geesin, with some fascinating pictures and footage of his first major exploits in the world of music: joining the jazz band The Original Downtown Syncopators. 'An Improvised Life' shows how his piano playing in this band lead to other things; soundtracks for adverts, appearances in television productions, and suchlike.
Geesin himself talks of his activities, with the help of his wife Frankie, and various key people from throughout his career. News to me was how he was support act for a couple of major performers - The Who and Genesis.
Pete Townshend talks at length about Geesin, who had him open for The Who twice - until Roger Daltrey had to "have a word" with Geesin as he'd been too popular with the audience as a support act! Townshend called him "badly behaved, and a vigilante" in his performance, and draws parallels with the likes of Syd Barrett (whom Townshend shares his memories of).

Artists including Roger Waters, Robert Plant, Ellie Goulding, George Ezra, Michael Ball & Alfie Boe, and Stereophonics are among the winners of the 43rd O2 Silver Clef Awards.
Presenter Edith Bowman will host the event, which raises money for music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins, tomorrow (Friday, July 6th) at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, while coverage from the red carpet will be presented by Peter Andre.
Roger Waters and Robert Plant are being honoured for their contribution to music and will be presented with the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Award and the Integro Outstanding Award respectively. Stereophonics pick up the American Express Icon Award, while Ellie Goulding is awarded the Liz Hobbs Best Female Award and George Ezra will take home the AEG Presents Best Male Award.
The hotel where the ceremony is taking place is situated on Park Lane, handily next to Hyde Park, where Roger will be performing in the evening. Many congratulations on the award, Roger!
UPDATE: Roger collected his award from Brian Eno, prior to headlining the British Summer Time show across the road in Hyde Park. "Checking the history books, Pink Floyd did the very first free concert in the park in 1969 so that's a great memory," said Roger. "Well done Nordoff Robbins for the great work that you do with the children who need the help of music as a healing force in their lives."

Tickets for the 21-date Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets European tour in September this year are selling very well in most cities, with some venues understandably completely sold out now.
Having seen the four inaugural shows in London in May, we urge you to go to see the band in their upcoming dates if at all possible - it's a concert you really won't want to miss!
To help spread the word about The Saucers, back on June 26th, the UK's BBC 6 Music Breakfast's Matt Everitt sat down with Nick to talk about how it feels revisiting the past and some of the most influential and psychedelic music ever created. Here's the interview (with thanks to Dave Carlin for the link to it):
