US music publication Billboard shares an illuminating interview with Nick Mason, talking about his new Saucerful Of Secrets band and tour. The piece explains some of the background to the project, including its origins in a suggestion from guitarist Lee Harris, and also reveals some of the thoughts behind the band's name, and material performed.
Nick said: "[The band name is] a quick way of explaining to people what we're doing. What I didn't want to get caught up in were a lot of people going, 'Well, why don't you play "Comfortably Numb"?' or 'Why don't you do something from The Wall?' I think the name itself indicates where we are and what we're doing."
The positive reaction to the recent quartet of shows in London seemed to catch Nick by surprise, with the audience as enthusiastic as the band members regarding the songs, and the approach to them. "I think we found a niche for ourselves, which is to do something that is not being done by everyone else, by the tribute bands or by Roger or David. It's a real return to some of the improvised sections and the atmosphere of the songs. The tendency in this day and age is to try and recreate things perfectly. We bring imperfection."

Scott Page, saxophone and rhythm guitar player during Pink Floyd's "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" era has joined forces with Roger Waters veteran vocalist Robbie Wyckoff. The two are now part of an all-star band that will play Pink Floyd music. The band, Think Floyd Experience, will be streaming their first performance, taking place in West Hollywood, this evening (Wednesday, 25th July, 2018), on the Ignited Network.
These days, there is a sea of tribute bands – not just for Pink Floyd but for many other classic acts as well. Page, asked about what sets the Think Floyd Experience apart, said:
"Our intention is to extend the Pink Floyd legacy - but the idea is to bring a very high tech and experience-based element to it. Tech will be a big part of the experience. We're focusing a channel on the Ignited Network on the project and live streaming our first gig. The channel, Pink Floyd Exp, will eventually be on blockchain, etc. We plan to make Think Floyd Experience a virtual reality endeavour."
What sets the project apart is the history and the prominence of the musicians involved.
Page and Wyckoff are joined by Jane's Addiction's Stephen Perkins on drums, Fishbone's Norwood Fisher on bass, Kid Rock's Kenny Olson and Jon Stankorb (of Signs of Life, the American Pink Floyd – a tribute band of its own) on guitars, and Roberta Freeman, another Momentary Lapse of Reason tour alumnus, on background and lead vocals.
Page and Wyckoff met through Olson who had played with the two in separate projects. Page, in turn, met Olson through Fisher when they played a NAMM show related gig at the House of Blues in Anaheim (the Nights After NAMM All-Star Mash-Up) earlier this year.
But it was a gig with Fisher's band, Trulio Disgracias, which cemented things: Page and Perkins were guests with Trulio Disgracias at Los Angeles' famous The Mint club for a performance of "Wish You Were Here." During that performance the musicians got a vibe that they had a good thing going. Page had worked with Perkins in the past: he played on Jane's Addiction's 2003 album "Strays."
The concert begins at 8:30pm Pacific Standard Time (11:30pm Eastern Standard Time and 4:30am British Summer Time). Think Floyd Experience will perform at 9:15pm (Pacific Standard Time, or 12:30am Eastern Standard Time and 5:30am British Summer Time).
For those who are familiar with 80s movies, actor and musician Corey Feldman will be making a guest appearance.
In order to view the show live or otherwise (and access some of an obscure catalogue of behind-the-scenes videos and collectibles from Page's time with Pink Floyd) if you are unable to attend in person, you need to register on the Ignited Network at this link: Ignited Network Scott Page Invitation. This is for iOS devices, so iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices.
Proceeds from this event will go to the Harold Robinson Foundation.

The new issue of the UK's Prog Magazine is published today (July 19th), and amongst the interesting articles about various artists who fall within the progressive music sphere, there's a very enjoyable, and insightful, interview with Nick Mason and his new band members Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt about their Saucerful Of Secrets supergroup, the joys of improvising, and why they definitely won’t be doing Comfortably Numb.
Accompanied by a couple of great, double page shots of the band backstage, and in action in their recent intimate London gigs, the interview is a fun and insightful look at how the band came together, what informed the set list, the importance of improvisation - as was done by the Floyd in their earlier days - and throughout it is clear how much all the band are enjoying the experience.
There's also a look, narrated by Nick, at his upcoming 3CD/3LP box set, Unattended Luggage, which is released on August 31st.
Peter Gabriel's on the front cover as there's a look at what went on when Peter left Genesis in 1975 up until the release of his first solo album Car in 1977 - a fascinating 20 months in which he grew cabbages, worked with a poet, released a little know single, covered The Beatles, went to see Bruce Springsteen and the Sex Pistols, and got Robert Fripp, Phil Collins, Sandy Denny, Keith Tippett and Percy Jones to play on a single by comedian Charlie Drake. And finally, with help from old Genesis pals Anthony Phillips and Richard Macphail, emerged as the solo artist in his own right, all illustrated with a load of previously unseen Gabriel pictures.
Also in Prog 89, there's an interview with Bev Bevan, the former ELO and Black Sabbath drummer, articles on other prog artists, concert and album reviews, and a cover mounted CD including music from Big Big Train, Regal Worm, Southern Empire, James McFadden and more.
You can purchase Prog Magazine, either as single issues or as a subscription, internationally through this direct link. Prog is also available on iPad, Google Play, Kindle and Nook.

On September 28th, 2018, Pink Floyd Records are releasing on heavyweight 2LP 180-gram vinyl, the 2011 compilation A Foot In The Door - The Best of Pink Floyd. This is the first time it has been available on vinyl, being released as a CD only, originally, and gathers tracks from throughout much of the band's career, taking in selections (chosen by members of the band) from 1967-1994. It is the latest in the series of vinyl releases, and bears catalogue number PFRLP21.
The tracks have been newly mastered for vinyl by longstanding Pink Floyd associate James Guthrie, with Joel Plante, and with lacquers cut by Bernie Grundman of Grundman Mastering in Los Angeles, California. This 2LP version features the reinstated version of Time, with the ringing alarm clocks at the start of the track restored, after being omitted on the CD release.
The original sleeve design, has been amended by Pink Floyd Creative Director Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis and Peter Curzon, to include alternate versions of the photographs used in the original CD version. The album package comes in a gatefold outer sleeve, with two separate printed inner bags, and is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl.
To order A Foot In The Door - The Best of Pink Floyd, please use these direct links (some of which aren't live yet, but please keep trying!): Amazon UK, Amazon.com, Amazon Canada, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon Spain and Amazon Italy. Rolling Stone have just published an interesting interview with Nick Mason, which is available to read online.
The interview, conducted by David Fricke, has Nick discussing his new 3CD/3LP solo box set and his Saucerful of Secrets band, which performs material from Pink Floyd's early days. The band are on tour across Europe throughout September, and tickets are now on sale. The article notes the possibility of the group playing some shows in the US next year.
Nick explains the choice of material for the Saucers' shows: "[Waters and Gilmour] have different areas that they like or don’t like. David was adamant that he didn’t want to do The Nile Song [from More] whereas Guy was mad keen to do it with us." Nick checked with the pair before launching the project. "I thought it would be good manners, and they were both supportive. Roger even said he would come down and sing one of the songs one night."
Nick goes into some detail of the background to his solo albums, and the various film soundtracks and shorter works he also did at the time. This area is rarely discussed, so it was good to hear how it all came about.
You can read the full interview here, and it may appear in an upcoming print edition of Rolling Stone Magazine, so we'll keep you posted on that.
