Around a year ago, we told you about Gerald Scarfe's then current exhibition at London's House of Illustration, which ran until mid-February this year. For all those who missed it, there's another chance coming up to enjoy "Gerald Scarfe: Stage & Screen".
The exhibition looks at Scarfe's varied work for stage and screen. It's a rare opportunity to explore the extensive but little-known production designs by the celebrated political cartoonist. Storyboards, costumes and props are on display from Pink Floyd's The Wall, Disney's Hercules and English National Ballet's The Nutcracker.
Many of the works on display are being shown for the very first time as part of "Gerald Scarfe: Stage & Screen". Having seen the London staging, we are sure that again there will be a fair amount of Floyd-related material on display amongst his work for other projects, so should definitely be worth a visit if you are able to get to Canterbury, in Kent (found around 65 miles to the east of London).
Well, this isn't a huge surprise - there's been overwhelming demand to see Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets on their 2019 North American tour, which takes place in March/April next year, and three more shows have just been added: a second night in Los Angeles, New York, and a show in Philadelphia, too.
The tour marks Nick's first full concert performances in North America since the 1994 Pink Floyd Division Bell tour; the last time he drummed in the US was during the 2006 Roger Waters tour.
As with the European shows this year, the venues picked are more intimate than arenas, with some of the places being quite historic. This will ensure the special atmosphere of the show is retained; for those who haven't yet heard, or seen, any of the band's performances, you are in for an absolute treat. Using the smaller venues results in shows that are truly memorable, and you aren't seeing specks on a distant stage, or sat there watching large video screens on the sides.
The band focus on the early days of the band - with nothing performed from later than 1972. We'll leave it at that if you don't want to know what exactly was performed this year, although you will of course find full details of each show, including the setlist performed, over at the Saucers' 2018 page.
Tickets for these three additional 2019 North American shows go on sale on Friday (November 16th) as detailed below, at 9am/10am local time, through this link at Ticketmaster. Please support this site (particularly as we struggle with getting rid of the persistent adverts) by using the link here to go to Ticketmaster to purchase your tickets; we really appreciate it. We also suggest you don't delay getting your tickets - this really is a show you won't want to miss!
As normal, we have set up a show page for each individual concert, found here, and in the side menu, look for Nick Mason's SOS 2019, and there's no exception for these newly announced shows. Each page has information on that particular show - where the venue is (including a map), the capacity, where and when to get tickets, and as the show gets nearer/takes place, with your help it will have pictures of the show, reports on what happened, the set list, and so on...
Here are the all-important details of the additional opportunities where - and when - you can catch Nick and the band, and when tickets for your chosen show(s) go on sale:
Just to reiterate, tickets for these shows go on sale on Friday at the times detailed above, through Ticketmaster. Please support this site by using the link here to purchase your tickets; we really appreciate it.
Some of you will recall our posts from the end of 2016, the start of 2017, and from July this year about Another Brick in the Wall, the award-winning new opera based on Pink Floyd's The Wall. Following the incredibly successful run in Canada, it moved south of the border to the US, and was performed by the Cincinnati Opera, in Ohio. Good news for some of you - it is returning to Canada, with Toronto's Sony Centre For The Performing Arts host to the show for five performances, between November 13th - 23rd, 2019.
Created with Roger Waters's full endorsement, it depicts Pink's journey from madness to redemption as never seen before, with sets created by designers from Cirque du Soleil, colossal video projections, a cast of 80, and a 70-piece orchestra in the pit. The production sold out its entire 10-performance run at the world premiere in Montreal last year. Read our fully illustrated review of the Montreal staging here.
For more information, and to buy tickets for any of the performances, visit this direct link at Ticketmaster. Our thanks to Phil Evans for letting us know about this upcoming series of performances.
BD visitor Sam Jacobson was at one of the Cincinnati performances, and reviewed it for the classical music/opera website Bachtrack which you can read through this link. Worth checking out in case you are interested in attending these future stagings...
Out now: the video (see below) for one of the versions of One More Yard, a song created in tribute to the sacrifice of the young World War 1 soldiers and to raise awareness of today's war on cancer. The song appears on an EP of the same name, featuring four versions of the song, and performed by an interesting band.
It's a collaboration which includes Nick Mason, Ronnie Wood, Sinead O'Connor, Brian Eno, Imelda May and Cillian Murphy. The EP is part of the #Evamore100 project founded by Professor Sir Chris Evans. The project will see an album of songs produced and launched within the next six months and proceeds from these releases will go to a new cancer awareness trust which will provide expert clinical advice and guidance to cancer sufferers around the world - helping maximise their chances of controlling and overcoming their battles with the disease.
Nick said: "This is an outstanding project that allows people such as myself to pay our tribute to the young men of 100 years ago who fought for our freedom but also to do something to help young people facing cancer today."
For more details of the project, please visit www.Evamore.co.uk. To purchase a copy (it's digital only - no physical release at present) to help raise money for the cancer awareness trust, please visit iTunes/Apple Music, or Amazon Music.
