Steve O'Rourke giving up motor racing Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Monday, 10 February 2003

The following extract from Daily Sports Car.com brings the very sad news that Steve O'Rourke is having to give up racing due to health concerns:

It is with a degree of sadness that we have to report that Steve O'Rourke has had a medical examination and a slight heart problem has been detected - which means that his racing career is effectively over. He and Tim Sugden had planned a return to the FIA GT Championship this year, with the EMKA Porsche - one of the most developed of the breed.

Tim Sugden has been O'Rourke's partner since 1996, and expressed the opinion that "Steve epitomised the spirit of the gentleman racer: he ran a superb team, he treated everyone extremely well, and he loved his racing - perhaps more the historics than anything else. We were going to have a very good year together..."

We at Brain Damage echo these comments; we've enjoyed many race meetings watching Steve and will miss seeing him going "ten tenths". Our thanks to Matthew Barlow for passing this news to us.

New David Gilmour interview to be broadcast in US Print E-mail

Thursday, 06 February 2003

US TV station VH1 Classic are broadcasting "Headline Act: Pink Floyd" on Monday, February 10th & Friday, February 14th at 7/6c pm & 4/3c pm. The hour-long programme includes "classic Pink Floyd videos" and a brand new interview with David Gilmour.

During the hour, Gilmour sets the record straight on the meaning of "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2": "I think regaling the world with the words, 'We don't need no education,' unless it's for the ones who understand a double negative, is probably not the greatest message to put across. Within the context of the film and the album, one would understand that (it) is actually a plea for better education." Videos that will be played during the hour will include "Another Brick In The Wall," "Arnold Layne," "On The Turning Away," "Welcome to the Machine," and "Wish You Were Here."

Pink Floyd Pompeii DVD news in Record Collector Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Thursday, 06 February 2003

Record Collector, the long-running UK magazine for all of us afflicted with a serious weakness for music, has printed some Floyd news in its February issue. Presumably with press deadlines as they are, they state that DSOTM is coming out on DVD-A (we now know it is SACD). They also state that the Knebworth 1990 DVD (reviewed on this site) has been delayed to the spring (around April time) and won't be out on the Eagle Vision label. That's strange as it is out, and is on Eagle Vision!

The most interesting news they include relates to Live At Pompeii on DVD. They state that it includes newly restored in-concert footage as well as an unedited studio run-through of DSOTM and pre-performance scenes! As the full details of this "Directors Cut" of Pompeii have not been released yet, this information cannot be confirmed. However, if it is true, then this release will be phenomenal!

New Italian Floyd book out now Print E-mail

Thursday, 06 February 2003

Our Italian friend, Christian Diemoz, has just brought out his new book, "Le canzoni dei Pink Floyd" ("Pink Floyd's songs") through Rome publishers Editori Riuniti. Over to Chris:

"The book is part of the "Pensieri & Parole" ("Thoughts and Words") series. These volumes try to analyze the history of an artist, or of a band, by taking as a starting point what is much more evident in their production: the lyrics of the songs. Therefore, since Pink Floyd became great due also to the use of effects and of spoken words, on some chapters (espcially The Wall and The Final Cut), I tried to transcribe those parts, and to offer their translation. That stuff, to me, is capital to fully understand Pink Floyd's message. The Wall chapter, then, also relates the songs on the album to the movie and to the live act, giving a wide range of info on what is probably the biggest concept ever in popular music. The books has sixteen chapters. Fifteen are dedicated to the studio albums (being a work on lyrics, it's just on studio versions we focus) and one to the 7" with songs that never ended up on LP (referring mostly to the early years). In each chapter you find: a synthetical introduction, with data on the album (producer, place where it was recorded, artwork for the sleeve, etc...), an introduction providing biographical info on the band's history during the making of the album and then, for each song, a critical analysis of the lyrics, plus the original version and the translated Italian one."

We've just received our copy of the book, and an interesting read it looks too. We're dusting off our Italian-English dictionary and a review will be here shortly. Meanwhile, it can be ordered direct from the publishers or your local bookshop using the ISBN of 88-359-5313-8. It costs 18 Euros.
