Two interesting new interviews with Roger Waters Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Saturday, 30 June 2012

This week, two new interviews with Roger Waters have been published which are both quite fascinating.

The first of these comes courtesy of Q107 radio in Toronto, and more specifically their presenter Dominik Diamond. He did a telephone interview with Roger on June 21st, who was clearly up for a chat and on great form. Earlier this week, Dominik posted the aired interview in three chunks, but today, the full telephone conversation is available to listen to via Dominik's Soundcloud page.

As Dominik told us, the "main difference is that there is much more chat from Roger about the politics of the Wall, the state of America and the world in general, more stuff about how much he loves the Occupy movement etc. It's about 35 minutes in total and pretty cool." Roger also talks about his new material, sharing some lyrics, and even talks about how he is mulling over certain musicians for the new music. Definitely worth a listen...

The other interview appears at Boston.com with additional questions, and responses from Roger, at their blog site. Roger makes it clear from the outset that he wouldn't be moving on to intimate shows in small concert halls, from the huge, theatrical nature of The Wall. "What? Sit down with my acoustic guitar? No. That is an extraordinary talent that a lot of people have, but it's not one of my talents... It always looked to me like my challenge when I went into rock ’n’ roll in the mid-60s was how can we make this more moving? By making it more theatrical was my answer."

They also ask about progress on the Broadway version of "The Wall", which has been in development for quite some time now. Written in part with "Billy Elliot" playwright Lee Hall, Roger's theatrical take on it is still a clear possibility. "I did meet [Lee] the last time we were in New York and we had a great dinner together, and he came to the London shows and he's still very enthusiastic and so am I, so I'm sure it's something that will happen, and I think the success of [the North American] arena and ballpark shows can only help the momentum of making something for Broadway."

Netherlands Arts Centre hosting Pink Floyd Backstage author talk Print E-mail

Kim NorrenSchunck, a government arts centre in The Netherlands, is currently exhibiting with the accompaniment of Pink Floyd's music.

The exhibition, cunningly called "Pink", is the work of artist Kim van Norren. It started a month ago and is due to finish on December 31st, 2012. Norren tends to work with life-size paintings, and also incorporates her own lyrics alongside the Floyd's music, including Us and Them and Another Brick In The Wall.

Amongst their Floyd related activities in August, is a lecture with author Bobby Hassall talking about his experiences. This takes place on August 28th, at 8pm, and reservations can be made online here. Hassall was the author of the excellent Pink Floyd Backstage (reviewed here), which is a fascinating look at the live Floyd experience from a quite unique perspective, so the lecture should be fun.

Three days earlier, on 25th August, there will be live performances mainly focused on Pink Floyd, and you can find out more through this link. The event sounds interesting - the start of the new school year is marked by this presentation where hundreds of scolars of the various school music departments perform in the open air on the Pancratiusplein and also play some gigs in Schunck itself. The central theme is the music of Pink Floyd, to give attention to the Pink exposition of artist Kim van Norren. Her wall sized paintings are also shown in the music school.

This all takes place in the deep south of The Netherlands and very near Germany (Aachen is a big place). More details of the arts centre, and "Pink", can be found at Schunck.nl.

The Raging Storm - Storm Thorgerson & Peter CurzonAs many of you are now aware from our review of The Raging Storm - The Album Graphics of StormStudios, the latest book from our favourite graphic designer, Storm Thorgerson, and his team, is a fun and enthralling tome. Associated with Pink Floyd since 1968, Storm, along with his colleagues Hipgnosis and more recently StormStudios, has provided most of the Floyd's album cover art along with other key imagery. Storm himself is a much respected personality within the world of Pink Floyd, his contribution a key part of their story.

The Raging Storm, which has now appeared as a paperback edition to give an alternative option to the limited edition hardback, is a collection of many pieces that StormStudios have completed for various artists over the past four years - not just for bands such as Pink Floyd, but more recent artists too, all of whom have been inspired to use StormStudios thanks to their painstaking approach to the work, creating often big and bold, unforgettable images, with a sense of humour or a cryptic note infusing each image.

Our exclusive and extensive interview with Storm Thorgerson has inspired many to seek out more information on the book. So you don't miss out, visit theragingstorm.firebrandstore.com. There, you can find the new paperback, the limited hardback, and a very limited deluxe edition that comes with a special print and is signed by Storm.

Tonite Let's All Make Love In London - 2012 Japanese editionOne for the collectors out there - the soundtrack album for the 1967 Peter Whitehead film, 'Tonite Let's All Make Love In London', gets a special CD release next month in Japan.

The film looked at the "swinging London" scene of the sixties, and is based around a series of psychedelic performances and interviews and features performance by Pink Floyd, together with footage of John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Mick Jagger, Vanessa Redgrave, Lee Marvin, Julie Christie, Allen Ginsberg, Eric Burdon, Michael Caine and many others.

This limited edition version of the album (appearing on July 25th, 2012) comes in a cardboard sleeve, a replica of the original UK LP. The CD itself is in the high-fidelity HQCD format (compatible with standard CD players) with K2HD mastering. It includes newly written liner notes and lyrics, and the Floyd tracks found on the album (unavailable elsewhere) are a 17-minute version of Interstellar Overdrive, two short reprises of the track, and the lesser-known track Nick's Boogie.

For those who want to add this to their collection, you can pre-order the release now from Amazon Japan and also CDJapan, both of which ship internationally. Our thanks to Kees Nijpels for letting us know about this upcoming release.
