Prog Magazine renames Grand Design Award in Storm Thorgerson's honour Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Thursday, 08 August 2013

Progressive Music Awards 2013Prog Magazine, organisers of the Orange Amplification presents Progressive Music Awards, have today announced that they will be renaming the Grand Design Award to the Storm Thorgerson Grand Design Award.

From Pink Floyd's 1968 A Saucerful Of Secrets to Biffy Clyro's 2013 Opposites album, Storm Thorgerson's incredible 45 year career saw him work with artists that included Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Muse, Black Sabbath, 10cc, Dream Theater plus many more.

Storm Thorgerson designs speak for themselves. He created some of the most iconic and striking images in rock including Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here. His designs are seen by many as integral to the albums as the music itself. His designs have dominated Best Album Cover polls around the world for many years and will do for years to come.

Storm sadly passed away in April this year, but his legacy will forever live on in his work. Jerry Ewing, Editor of Prog Magazine said: "Storm's contribution to prog rock and beyond is incredible. When we heard of his passing, we felt that it was only right to pay tribute to the man who has given so much to music through his art. This re-titling of the Grand Design award is especially fitting, given that Storm won this award at last year's ceremony for his continued work with Pink Floyd. We are honoured to name this award after him."

Peter Curzon, co-founder of StormStudios and close friend of Storm says: "Winning the award last year for the Pink Floyd 'Immersion' box sets gave Storm great pleasure, but to have the whole award dedicated to him is something that would have at first amused him, but would have made him feel very honoured. It's great that Prog has recognised the impact Storm's work has had on the world of music and album cover design - he loved his work and was always thinking of the next idea - his legacy will now live on not only through his incredible body of work but also through this fantastic event."

This is the second year of the Progressive Music Awards, and with the location so popular with attendees last year, once again it will take place in the stunning and unique surroundings of Kew Gardens on Tuesday, September 3rd, and will be hosted by Gavin Esler.

Voting is open now and a full list of all the categories and nominees can be found at www.progrockmag.com/awards where readers can have their say by voting in the various categories. Readers who register to vote will have the chance to win a bumper prize of prog goodies compiled from nominated acts.

The Wall potentially moves football match to another country! Print E-mail

The Sofia Globe this evening reports that the Roger Waters concert on August 30th at the Vasil Levski National Stadium in the Bulgarian city, could have a dramatic effect on a potential upcoming football fixture.

They note that: "Ludogorets Razgrad qualified earlier this week for the Uefa Champions League play-off round by defeating Partizan Belgrade. The play-off round is due to be played on August 20/21 and August 27/28. If the Uefa draw in Nyon on August 9 sets Ludogorets as the home team for the second match of the tie, then the club will be unable to play the match at Vasil Levski stadium, which has been booked by concert organisers Sofia Music Enterprises for the several [days] prior to the gig.

"The stadium is the only one in Bulgaria certified to host Uefa Champions League matches at this stage of the competition. This prompted an angry tirade from club owner Kiril Domouschiev in an interview with local television station bTV. 'The only stadium in Bulgaria that is licenced by Uefa and is the national stadium at that, turns out to have signed a contract, for a lengthy period, for some concert. Some colossal walls are to be built and it seems that we use the national stadium as a concert hall instead of its actual purpose,' Domuschiev said.

"Domuschiev blamed the stadium's management, saying his team might be forced to play its home game abroad and issued a not-so-subtle threat: 'If we are going to play abroad, maybe it is best that we move the team and the investment abroad too, because it is shameful that there is not a single stadium in this country.'"

Bulgaria's Sports Minister Mariana Georgieva said that the team will play at Vasil Levski National Stadium whatever date the draw assigns for its home match, but did not comment on what would happen to The Wall Live. Sofia Music Enterprises have not commented on the issue yet either. Naturally, should the concert change date or venue, we will let you know as soon as we know...

Outside The Wall - Pink Floyd The Wall Italian exhibition Print E-mail
Written by Glenn Povey

Outside The Wall exhibition in Padua, ItalyGlenn Povey, founder of Brain Damage Magazine, and highly regarded author of a range of essential Pink Floyd reference books, was recently invited to Italy as a guest speaker at Outside The Wall, a major exhibition focused on the Floyd's 1979 album and subsequent related activities. His exclusive report and great photographs below gives us a summary of the event, in particular his and Gerald Scarfe's appearances.

Organised by Alberto Durgante, Outside The Wall was one of the largest Pink Floyd exhibitions and events ever staged. Held in a prestigious new arts centre of The Hall of the Cultural Center Agora Altinate/San Gaetano in Padova, Alberto and his team notably Gian-Luigi Soldi and Marco Bonecher brought together a stunning collection of artwork, photos, memorabilia and live performance all tied in with Roger Waters' performance of the Wall in Padova on 26th July.

The 16 day exhibit running between 13th and 28th July featured a stunning array of Wall related memorabilia charting the album, original show and tour with ticket stubs, passes, newspaper articles, t-shirts, records and a collection of photos taken by rock photographers Jill Furmanovsky and Pete Still. Coverage also extended to the Berlin Wall concert of 1990, and of course Waters' current staging of the Wall and a vast array of photos supplied by super-fan Simon Wimpenny.

Among exhibits of special interest was an original 1980 Wall show puppet of Pink, which everyone must have had their photo taken with (including its creator, Gerald Scarfe - see below), a collection of original Gerald Scarfe drawings for the film gifted by the artist, and animation cells from the film. A further exhibit was also displayed of photographs taken by David Appleby working behind the scenes in the making of The Wall film.

New French edition of Nick Mason's Pink Floyd book includes posters Print E-mail

Pink Floyd, l'histoire selon Nick Mason, the FreNick Mason 2013 Pink Floyd l'Histoire Selonnch language version of Nick's excellent "Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd", is being released on October 16th, 2013 in a special new edition.

With a redesigned (albeit much plainer) cover, the major aspect of this which intrigues us is that this new edition, from EPA, includes three 40cm x 60cm concert poster reproductions with the book. No details are currently forthcoming as to what these posters are, but this additional incentive will surely prove an incentive to those who are yet to buy Nick's book.

The book, originally published in October 2004, was a big hit with fans and critics alike for the candid - and in places, incredibly amusing - text looking at the rise of the band. It had a revision in October 2005, to include Live8, and in July 2011, a further revision was made bringing the book further up to date. Our review of that edition can be seen here.

Pre-orders for this new French edition can be made now through this direct link at Amazon France which gives a 5% saving over the normal selling price of this book. Our thanks to Frédéric "Ddondestan" Barrès for letting us know about this new version.
