Roger Waters has been talking to RollingStone.com about his activities since finishing The Wall Live on September 21st, in Paris, France. Clearly determined to keep working, rather than taking a much deserved rest after the rigours of the tour, he's been hard at work on his new album. "I finished a demo of it last night," he tells Rolling Stone. "It's 55 minutes long. It's songs and theater as well. I don't want to give too much away, but it's couched as a radio play. It has characters who speak to each other, and it's a quest. It's about an old man and a young child trying to figure out why they are killing the children."
Rolling Stone asks if he's likely to tour the new album once it is complete. "I'm suffering a little bit of withdrawal after ending the Wall tour," he says. "It's sort of a relief to not have to go out and do that every night, but they're such a great team. There were 180 of us together everyday. That piece was very moving every night."
Waters continued: "I can't top that tour. First of all, you have to accept the fact that I'm not going to live forever. I'm 70 years old. You just have to accept that when you do something as enormous as that tour. The hardest thing in the world is thinking of something to do, so going and doing it is a reward in itself."
He doesn't rule out the possibility of reviving The Wall at some point, and happily recalls which city had the loudest fans of all. Read more at RollingStone.com.
Coming on March 24th, 2014, is White of the Eye, on Dual Format DVD & Blu-ray. Described by the distinguished critic David Thomson as "one of the great secret works in cinema", White of the Eye is one of the most bizarre and unforgettable thrillers ever made.
Of principal interest to Pink Floyd fans is the soundtrack of this film from 1987, which was created by Nick Mason and Rick Fenn. This duo, of course, also recorded the album Profiles, which came out in 1985. Officially, the soundtrack consists of 26 pieces of music, and the film itself has long been unavailable. This new release will prove popular as it has become a cult classic.
The story is as follows. A serial killer is on the loose in and around the small community of Globe, Arizona, and housewife Joan White (Cathy Moriarty) gradually comes to suspect that her opera-loving hi-fi engineer husband Paul (David Keith) might know more than he's letting on...
So far so familiar, but in the hands of British visionary Donald Cammell (who wrote and co-directed Performance with Nicolas Roeg), the film becomes a dazzling kaleidoscope of images and ideas, spanning everything from Apache folklore, desert landscapes and stylish murder set-pieces that recall Dario Argento to a painfully vivid dissection of the emotional fissures undermining a modern marriage. It's all set to an equally eclectic score co-written by Mason and Fenn.
The 18 certificate release comes on 2 discs. The DVD is PAL encoded, but the Blu-ray of course isn't encoded to NTSC or PAL. It might be region locked though, and at this stage we cannot say for any certainty whether it will or not. Our thanks to Kees Nijpels for his help with this information. At present, the DVD/Blu-ray set can be pre-ordered through this direct link at Amazon UK. Amazon have a pre-order price guarantee - order it now, and you'll pay the lowest price between now and release. Clicking on our link to enter Amazon will also mean we earn a small amount for every item you buy, helping us with site running costs at no extra cost to you. We really appreciate it!
As most of you will know now, the London exhibition to coincide with the release of the wonderful new book, The Gathering Storm: The Album Art of Storm Thorgerson is now up and running at the newly opened Proud Archivist, a combined gallery, bar, restaurant, cafe and events space in Hertford Road, London
N1. Today, we have an update on one of the events they have scheduled during the exhibition run.
The exhibition itself is a wonderful look through the archives of his work, and the work of his colleagues over the years, with some of the pieces presented in stunningly large sizes. There are also other items which are great fun - letters from Storm to record companies which are a hoot.
Of the events still to come, the first of these is the one that has been re-scheduled. The free Live Liquid Album Art event still takes place on Sunday, November 17th, but has moved from 2-4pm, to 6-9pm. Hosted by key StormStudios bods Peter Curzon and Dan Abbott, it gives you the chance to create your own liquid interpretation of Storm's iconic cover for The Dark Side of the Moon. More details here.
There are other events taking place. November 19th sees them host a classic album playback, letting you admire Storm's work in the context of the music and artists which inspired it; and on November 22nd they're hosting a free screening of Taken by Storm by Roddy Bagawa, a fantastic documentary about Storm's life and work.
You
can see more details about each event, and get tickets where
appropriate, on their website, TheProudArchivist.co.uk.
Shindler, head of the Italy Star Association, used military maps and intelligence reports to identify the spot where Lieutenant Waters and his comrades in the Royal Fusiliers were surrounded by the Germans and where Waters was killed.
Roger's poem, titled One River, begins:
When the wind scythes through the crop and good men fall
And children soft in mothers arms cringe, unbelieving, from the desperados casual blade
My father, distant now but live and warm and strong, in uniform tobacco haze, speaks out.
‘My son’, he says, ‘Stay not the passion of your loss, But rather keen and hone its edge
That you may never turn away, numb, brute, from bets too difficult to hedge...
The entire poem, written originally in 2002, can be read in the Wall Live tour programme. There are hopes that a memorial will be erected in the location. Shindler: "I'm negotiating with the local council for a monument at that spot in memory of Lieutenant Waters and all the Allied troops who were killed and who have no grave."
With apologies for the lack of advance notice, Roger Waters will be appearing on the CBS Sunday Morning show on US television today, November 10th. Please check your local listings for time and channel number, but we understand it is 9am-10:30am EST.
Their website holds various aired interviews and stories, so hopefully it will appear there in due course for those unable to see Roger's appearance. As yet, we don't know the nature of his appearance but we suspect it is to talk about this week's appearance on the Stand Up for Heroes event, along with it being Remembrance Sunday in the UK, with the US observed Veterans Day following tomorrow, which we are sure Roger will also touch on.
UPDATE: Hopefully, you'll all be able to see the video of this piece here:
