The Gathering Storm - London launch, October 2013

The London exhibition to coincide with the release of the wonderful new book, The Gathering Storm: The Album Art of Storm Thorgerson is now up and running at the newly opened Proud Archivist, a combined gallery, bar, restaurant, cafe and events space in Hertford Road, London N1. Below, we have a copy of the book signed by the team at StormStudios to give away in our latest competition, but first, more about the exhibition, and some unmissable upcoming events...

The exhibition itself is a wonderful look through the archives of his work, and the work of his colleagues over the years, with some of the pieces presented in stunningly large sizes. There are also other items which are great fun - letters from Storm to record companies which are a hoot. The launch party to open the event saw many friends of Storm coming together to celebrate the man and his work, and the StormStudios photo gallery from the event can be seen on their Facebook page (I even pop up in one of the pictures!) which gives an idea of the exhibition itself, along with the pictures to the left.

The gallery are hosting a number of events whilst the exhibition is on. November 10th sees the gallery host a free workshop exploring the craft of album artwork design, hosted by key StormStudios bods Peter Curson and Dan Abbott, from 2-4pm; on November 17th they host Live Liquid Album Art, letting you participate in the creation of a unique, one-off piece of art using some of the same techniques employed by Storm; November 19th sees them host a classic album playback, letting you admire Storm's work in the context of the music and artists which inspired it; and on November 22nd they're hosting a free screening of Taken by Storm by Roddy Bagawa, a fantastic documentary about Storm's life and work. You can see more details about each event, and get tickets where appropriate, on their website, TheProudArchivist.co.uk.

Roger Waters' Amused To Death SACD/double LP update Print E-mail

Roger Waters - Amused to Death SACD and vinyl reissue promoBack at the start of the year, we brought you the news that Analogue Productions, who were responsible for the superb SACD of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, will be issuing a double LP and SACD of Roger Waters' 1992 epic Amused to Death, first released on vinyl in 1992 in a very limited double LP edition.

In January, Analogue Productions sent out a mailer about it, and were also in touch with us. They told us that "it will be done in the highest quality possible with a team of Doug Sax and James Guthrie and using the original analog master tapes with vinyl pressed at Quality Record Pressings". One of the things uppermost in most minds is when we might see the releases. "We do not have an exact release date. At this point, six to 12 months from now is a good guess, though we're hoping it will be closer to six months". They have now fixed a new (potentially still provisional) release date of April 22nd, 2014, presumably to give sufficient time for the highest quality to be obtained for this release.

The double LP will be on 200-gram vinyl, and the SACD will be a stereo hybrid (so, will play on non-SACD capable standard CD players). The Q Sound virtual surround sound will be preserved in its 3D glory for these new editions of what we consider one of Roger's best works. As soon as we have any further information on this eagerly anticipated release we will let you know.

2013 Pink Floyd pumpkin - Joe Ringus
2013 Pink Floyd pumpkin - Joe Ringus

Regulars to Brain Damage over the years will know that our friend Joe Ringus is a hugely talented pumpkin artist, and each year crafts a Pink Floyd themed pumpkin for Hallowe'en (which is celebrated by many, principally this evening, but in a number of places it covers a number of days).

Joe has been hard at work yet again, and has done a phenomenal job once again! As before, we're delighted to share his incredible carving with you. Joe said: "This year's installment takes me to a fabulous album that I never thought I'd carve. I start to wonder each year if this will be the year when I run into a wall (no pun intended) and can't think of something to carve. But I think I've got a few years to go…!"

We certainly hope so - we think that Joe's done another excellent job, we love receiving them, and we're delighted to bring you his very latest design. Click the thumbnails to the left to see Joe's hard, and careful, work in more detail.

Pink Floyd's Household Objects inspected Print E-mail

Household Objects fake coverIn an article in the UK's Classic Rock magazine - as a website exclusive - author Mark Blake (who wrote the great study of Pink Floyd, Pigs Might Fly) takes a good look at the Floyd's great "lost" project - Household Objects.

For those unfamiliar with the project, it was an attempt to record an album using no instruments at all. Instead, as the title implied, implements found around the home were pressed into service to see what sort of sounds they could make, with the idea of using them to create a complete suite of songs.

This turned out to be hugely laborious, and little got completed. These days, the task would be simple with samplers and synthesisers making quick work of the exercise. For the Floyd though, they were stuck with having to do things like stretch elastic bands over cardboard boxes, changing the tensions to get different notes.

As Mark points out in the article, "You can understand the band’s reluctance to attach much importance to Household Objects now. After all, The Dark Side Of The Moon turned 20-something ennui and navel-gazing into big business, and Pink Floyd rightly never looked back again. But the sounds of these plucked elastic bands and scraping broomsticks are the last hurrah for the old Pink Floyd; the one that was young, silly and experimental. “It seemed like a good idea at the time,” said Roger Waters. It was, and it still is."

It's a fascinating article, and you can read it in full through this link where you'll find various pictures - including the fun, imaginary cover to the left, created by a fan, and a video clip.
