Night twenty-three of the tour, and the fifth of five (non-consecutive) nights in at the iconic Madison Square Garden, in the midtown part of Manhattan, bordering Hell's Kitchen. It was also, sadly, the final show of the set of Luck and Strange dates.
The performance throughout was reportedly yet again great (see John McAlister's review below), and proved an audio and visual treat! A Great Day For Freedom remained in the set as the dust had settled from the 2024 election results.
We'd love to know in more detail how the concert went. Did you go? Let us know what YOU thought!
CONCERT REVIEW by BD CONTRIBUTOR, JOHN McALISTER
After seeing the three Hollywood Bowl shows I was still very excited to see David Gilmour at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York after travelling from Melbourne Australia a few weeks ago.
The venue is so well located in Manhattan and very easy to get in to and around. there were no queues for anything even in the hour before showtime. It was a pleasure to soak up the atmosphere of the venue and history which is shown on the walls on all the concourses.
Maybe its being inside or the compactness of the venue but the atmosphere was buzzing before showtime. The seats are plush and such a contrast to the wooden bleachers at the Hollywood Bowl. The crowd was so appreciative of everything Gilmour did tonight, many standing ovations. The first was when he thanked the audience for the first time, he was quite taken aback by the sustained applause and sort of stood there and absorbed it all for quite some time.
I'm sure Fat Old Sun had some extra length in the solo at the end it was very punchy and a standout of the night. The big balls in High Hopes did land well into the upper echelons of the garden but were also a struggle to keep off the stage with Romany reaching out to biff one away.
The second half included A Great Day For Freedom and an extended thank you to the band after Coming Back To Life. Gilmour also thanked his son Gabriel who was on screen briefly. Before the encore thousands of people turned on the lights of their mobile phones creating a nice cigarette lighter ambience while they shouted for more. The show ended of course with an extended Comfortably Numb with everyone out of their seat going nuts. Gilmour thanked everyone and then there were lots of hugs between band members before one final bow.
I stayed on as the crowd started to leave and Gilmour after all the bows just slowly walked to the side of the stage by himself and stood at the top of the stairs acknowledging the crowd who were sitting right at the side of the stage and then slowly walked down the steps out of view.
Light rain had started to fall outside the Gardens after a completely amazing night.
