CONCERT REVIEW and VIDEO by BD CONTRIBUTOR, Carlos Valencia Chias

Roger Waters The Wall Live has been simply the best concert experience I’ve ever had. I’m a big fan of Pink Floyd and I’ve been following the progress of this tour ever since it was announced on november 2009. Roger first came with The Wall on december 2010 at Palacio de los Deportes (arena), and I was able to attend one of its dates. After being blown away by the size and production of this show, I knew I had to be there once again when it was announced that he would return to the city, this time at Foro Sol (stadium).

I bought tickets for both dates this time, and I bought them on the side of the Studium rather than at the very front, knowing already that a show of this size is better appreciated from a distance.

I went to the show excited knowing that I would relive the great experience of 2010 once again but not expecting anything new, but surprisingly and fortunately, I was wrong, this time, the show was escalated to the next level.

The Wall was bigger this time, and the extra space was wonderfully used for now we were able to see the excellent animations AND a live feed of what was happening on stage. The sound was mind blowing, taking advantage of the better accoustics on a Studium, everything was simply perfect.

This time, Roger surprised us during “Mother”, singing the song along with a backtrack of himself during Pink Floyd’s The Wall tour at Earl’s Court in 1980. At one point, Roger paused and spoke to the audience in spanish saying: “Este concierto está dedicado a todos los niños perdidos en esta guerra de narcos!” (this concert is dedicated to all the children lost during this war on drugs!), which I thought it was an incredible detail because, a few days before the concert, I read an interview with Roger by a mexican journalist, in which Roger learned about the ongoing war on drugs in our country, which has left over 50,000 people dead in roughly 6 years; in this interview, Roger asks for further information on the issue, so, given the anti-war message of his tour, he put together a massive collage of pictures from the victims of this war projected on the wall as he gave the message, it was great.

One of the biggest highlights happened during “Waiting for the Worms”. As the song progressed, thousands of people took out their lighters and started setting them on and off in sync with the song’s rythm, making this an amazing sight for both Roger and us; seeing the audience bonding so perfectly with the show, during one of my favourite songs, with the pig flying over, is something that I will never forget. By the way, this happened in all 3 shows I attended.

The cherry on top of the sundae came at the end, after the Wall was torn down, during “Outside the Wall”, Roger thanked the audience and mentioned that there has been over 150 shows worldwide and that this was the best one yet; I know many artists say this to every city they visit, but I’ve seen Roger Waters 4 times in my lifetime, and this was the first time I heard this, so I was quite happy and satisfied when it ended.

Thanks Roger for visiting our country for the second time on this tour, it was an amazing experience and something that any Pink Floyd fan should see at least once.
