As we reported back on September 19th, Roger Waters last night joined an all-star lineup of musicians at a Levon Helm tribute concert at the Izod Center (part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey).
"Love for Levon" also featured John Mayer, Bruce Hornsby, Ray LaMontagne, Gregg Allman, Joe Walsh of The Eagles, and many others. The concert was in honor of Helm, the late Woodstock resident who was a member of The Band and a Grammy-winning solo artist. Helm, along with Rick Danko and Garth Hudson (fellow Band members) took part in Roger's 1990 Wall concert in Berlin. Helm sadly passed away on April 19th this year.
Proceeds from last night's ticket sales will "help support the lasting legacy of Levon Helm by helping his estate keep ownership of his home, barn and studio, and to continue The Midnight Ramble Sessions."
Waters was at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock on Monday, where rehearsals for the concert were also held on Saturday and Sunday. Waters was joined in Woodstock by G.E. Smith, who performed with him recently on "The Wall Live" tour.
It was reported in a few places that they rehearsed two songs: "Wide River To Cross" a song that was part of Levon's 'Dirt Farmer' record (one of Roger's recent favourite albums) which Waters performed with Amy Helm on the night, and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", which he performed with My Morning Jacket. Here's three clips from the show last night, for all of us who weren't able to attend and show our support for the cause:
