Some of you will recall that back in January 2007, we brought you some rare pictures of the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd playing at the Gyllene Cirkeln (Golden Circle) in Sveavägen in Stockholm. The concert took place on September 10th, 1967, and clearly looks to have been a cabaret show! "No one will like what we play", said a Floyd band member to the audience in resignation before the concert. Then, in December last year, we told you that a full recording of the concert was being played in a special event taking place this month, with the second of two playbacks happening tonight.
With thanks to arstider, who runs an interesting Floyd blog in Sweden, we can give you more details of what was heard on Tuesday night, and what will be heard tonight. If you click the thumbnail, you'll also see arstider's picture of the Floyd mannequins on stage, accompanying the playback!
The tape delighted the audience with the following: Jam Session / Matilda Mother / Pow R Toc H / Scream Thy Last Scream / Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun / Arnold Layne / Interstellar Overdrive. Quite a set, and in the unique atmosphere of the Golden Circle, pretty much as it was back in 1967 when the recording was made.
Sound quality was said to be wonderful, on the whole, and tantalisingly, it seems that EMI might be looking to release the recording at some point - the organiser specifically asked that no-one record the audio and post it anywhere online, as that would jeopardise any chance of this.
Göran Nyström was also there, and told us that it was a "great recording except for the singing. PA problems. Otherwise superb and excellent stereo separation. Syd very far from a spent force. And it was not Arnold Layne. It was Emily. Yes, a live Emily.
"The jam session was labelled Before Or Since because of comments from Roger after the song was completed. This was however not played at the event".
